Keeping fit and looking good is probably high on your seasonal checklist. However, seasonal treats (hello, ice cream!) always prove to be a constant temptation. To keep that goal of a toned summer bod in sight, we’re counting down some of our favorite summer superfoods that will both keep you in shape and enhance that radiant glow. If you’re looking to rock some serious crop tops this season, let Chia Seeds help you get that toned-looking stomach. These wonder seeds are a high source of natural omega-3s, which lower fattening stress hormones like cortisol. To add this Aztec favorite to your diet, Keren Gilbert, MS, RD recommends adding them to your favorite foods. “Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants, minerals, fiber and protein. They can be added to any meal, whether it’s sprinkling on salads, veggies, or mixing them in yogurt, oatmeal or shakes,” Gilbert says.
Containing soluble fiber, Oatmeal should be next on your summer food checklist, as it helps keep you full throughout the day, and works to flush out bad digestive acids out of your system. And although it may be tempting to pick up those tasty flavored oatmeal packs, Keren Gilbert recommends sticking with unsweetened oatmeal instead. “It is most beneficial to eat unsweetened oatmeal because the added sugars in sweetened oatmeal cancel out the health. Adding fresh berries or a little almond milk for added flavor is the best option,” Gilbert explains.
When you are trying to watch your waistline, Apricot is a great snack to munch on, as it’s rich in antioxidants and beta carotene, which helps you stay full all day long and wards off belly fat. Need another fat fighter? Broccoli is a great go-to (and rich in fiber), as its special enzymes aid in digestion and metabolism management.
Instead of grabbing that bag of chips, Almonds beat those pesky cravings in a flash, as they are high in monounsaturated fats, minerals and magnesium which keeps you fuller longer. However, be wary of salted and smoked almonds, as they can cause unwanted bloating. “A handful of raw almonds will keep the belly fat away, but be cautious of salted of salted or smoked nuts which contain a lot of sodium as it can cause bloating,” Gilbert states.
Summer fruits are also a great summertime treat, as local and ripe fruits make a great substitute for those fattening delicacies. Rewarding your tastebuds instantly, Peaches help beautify your skin with their high levels of collagen-boosting vitamin C. Don’t know how to enjoy them? Dr. Frank Lipman recommends enjoying them as often as you can. “Enjoy them as a snack, add them to the barbecue or toss them into your green salads,” Lipman suggests.
Spellbound by the taste of juicy Watermelon? Bite into this seasonal fruit not only to enjoy its amazing taste, but to also reap its amazing beauty benefits. “Watermelon contains 99% water, so when the heat wave sets in, make sure to turn to this fruit for extra hydration. It is loaded with those important, protective antioxidants and also acts as a diuretic and helps prevent water retention and bloating,” Dr. Lipman finds.
Next time you make that summer smoothie, throw in some Berries for a superfood punch. “Berries are the fruits with the highest antioxidants, yet are low in sugar. Enjoy these local, seasonal superfoods with antioxidants to help protect the skin against sun damage,” Lipman concludes.
